Aww yea!
OK. I got the price down MAJORLY with Ral's help (note, this is just the bare essentials. No sound card, there's on board audio; no monitor, as I can use a shitty 14" one for a while; no keyboard and mouse, i have some extra ones laying around anyway; etc. NOTE: The appropriate links for each item can be on the Compy Part List page):
- SPIRE X-Dreamer II Silver ATX Mid-Tower Case with 350W Power Supply - $52.00
- Asus A7N8X, nForce2 Skt A, LAN/Audio Retail - $119.99
- AMD Athlon XP 3200+ "Barton", 400MHz FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail - $187.00
- 2 Geil Value Series 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - $99.00 each
- Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive - $105.00 (More space, lower price compared to the 120gb on the list!)
- Samsung Black 52X32X52X16 DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive - $52.99 (though black doesn't look all that good with a silver case..
- ATI RADEON 9600 XT 128MB AGP - $167.00
Total = $881.98
Much better than the previous $1553.88! I'll get the rest of the stuff (monitor, keyboard, mouse, soundcard, TV card, etc; in that order) as I earn more money, but what's listed above is enough to get me started.
...Why am I so worried about this right now? It's not anywhere near summer, and, according to my calculations (i've always wanted to say that, actually, no, not really..), I'll get about $600 by the end of summer... Hm, maybe I could convince my mom to let me start working early, or maybe I could do something else, not quite sure what yet, though...
Update: Heh, didn't realize that the MP processor was a server processor.. -_- So, that cut down on the price by a lot, even when I did bump it up to a 3200+ =P Now, however, I think I need to get a new mobo. The current one I have listed says it's good for 600mhz ~ 3000+ I'm not sure if the ~ gives me enough leeway to put a 3200+ in, but I don't wanna take the chance... So, yea. Most of the motherboards on CBW don't list their speed ranges for the processors, but I'm hesitant about buying processors and motherboards over the 'net because they most likely won't do all the good heatsync stuff like CBW would. CBW will do it right on the spot, as soon as I buy it, for free..
Update (again): Actually, i've only found one ASUS board on newegg.com that gives the speed range for the processor. I haven't looked at any others yet 'casue I like ASUS and would like to go with one of their motherboards if I could.

That’s not bad! That’s with 5 hour days, 2 days a week, $6.50ish/hour. Not sure what tax is though…
Work more then 2 days. You dont need to start early

for the procs, MP is a different series meant for server computers
in the norm athlon xp series, barton=more cache

^if you want to try out the 64 bit, the 1.8GHz is easy to OC to 2GHz

^athlon xp 2500 barton, $80 now, i have it in my comp, i can run any game without slowdown

Just sell yourself on the streets.
April 24th, 2004 - 14:34
MP? Oh.. lol I didn’t see that in there before. Thanks a lot. Hm, I’ll have to update my list accordingly then…
Will newegg do all the heatsync stuff with the processor? I don’t have any of the supplies to do that, and even if I did, I’d have no clue how to even do it. I don’t think my dad would either, ’cause when he used to build computers, there was no need for a heatsync or anything. That’s why I want to get my processor and mobo at Computer Builder’s Warehouse, as they’ll install the processor and heatsync for free, right when you buy it.

Also, should I choose another motherboard? The motherboard says it goes up to roughly 3000+, and the one i’m looking at now is a 3200+. It says it’s 600mhz ~ 3000+. I’m not sure if that ~ gives me enough leeway to put a 3200+ in there…

installing the heatsinksink is moderatly easy, nothing to worry about though(yet it is easier when others do it for you : )
600-3000 are you talking about Athlon model number or MHz?
cuz the 3200 runs at 2.2GHz(i doubt u’ll want to OC it to 3.2ghz)
the Asus A7N8X-E deluxe should be fine for the proc
April 25th, 2004 - 11:10
Meh, the mobo didn’t have mhz following the 3000 (though it did for the 600), sorta like how the processor doesn’t have mhz following the 3200, because it’s not a true 3200. So, that’s what confused me, but I guess the mobo should be referring to clock speed and not model number.
… I still don’t like the idea of installing a heatsink… ’cause if I do it incorrectly, bam! (well, maybe not so quickly or loudly) no more processor… I don’t wanna spend a lot of money on the processor only to fry it…
April 25th, 2004 - 14:41
theres usually a thing that shuts down the comp if the proc or mobo gets too hot. The only hard thing about the amd heatsink is getting it over both sides, and make sure you dont mess up the thermal paste stuff thats on the heatsink.
2)pay 5 bucks or something for the cbw ppl to do it for you
1)do it yourself
3)bring it to my house
April 25th, 2004 - 16:15
nice case choice, you can either spray paint the cdrw drive or get the same case too match up the colors
April 25th, 2004 - 17:13
Or I could have a two-toned computer, it’ll make it “unique” =P
April 25th, 2004 - 17:15
‘Tis $25 for installation of processor (including heatsync). Though, by “installation” I assume they mean putting the processor on the mobo too.

pffffft….do it yourself or whatever you want to do
April 25th, 2004 - 18:24
lol, I don’t trust myself with delicate stuff like this. I’d rather pay someone to do it and know that it’s been done properly, than for me to do it and screw up.

its funny how you how all this planned before youve even started stockpiling your money. i can see your anxious.
do you know what the min wage is btw?
May 3rd, 2004 - 13:35
I planned this all to give me something to look forward to, to keep my mind on a goal.
My mom said it was something like $6.50/hour, I think. I’ll have to check again.
