Reboot!

Posted on April 26, 2004

Bwahaha!  I've got the perfect name for my computer now!  There used to be this awesome show called Reboot, 'twas made by a Canadian company called Mainframe.  Well, it was about these sprites and binomes (?) that lived in a computer called... wait for it... Mainframe!  The basic story goes like this: There are these game squares that come down everytime the user initiates a game.  Any sprite/binome that was caught in the game square as it landed would be thrust into the game as a character from that game.  The sprites had these icons that, when they tapped them and said "Reboot!" they would become game characters that would then compete against the user.  If the user won, the sector that the game landed in, and everyone inside the game square at the moment would be nullified.  They weren't gone, but they were nulls.  Nulls were little blobby slugish type guys.  They were all sorts of colors (one episode comes to mind where all the nulls join together to form NullZilla).  The main (sprite) characters in the show are Dot Matrix, Enzo Matrix (dot's little brother), Bob the Guardian, Phong, Frisket the dog, Mike the TV, and AndrAIa, a game sprite.

Dot runs a diner called "Dot's Diner."  Her little brother, Enzo, is about.. 12 years of age maybe?  So he tends to get into trouble quite a bit.  Frisket is his pet dog, and accompanies Enzo pretty much anywhere they go.  Bob was sent to Mainframe from the SuperComputer, where he was trained as a guardian to protect systems from games squares.  Him and Dot kinda have a thing for eachother, but they don't really "get together" until near the end of the fourth season.  (Four seasons altogether, sorry if I haven't already pointed that out.  Or was it the third season where they "got together"?) Phong is sorta like the system... admin?  Something along those lines.  He makes sure everything runs smoothly and installs patchs and upgrades, and gives helpful guidance to the other sprites.  He also lives in the central core of the system.  Mike the TV is an annoying appliance that belongs to Bob.  He's also a news reporter sometimes, but is usually trying to sell something to someone for "Only ninety-nine, ninety-nine, niiinety-niiiine!"  The only reason he is still on is because Bob lost the remote one day....  AndrAIa is a sprite that came from a submarine-type game.  Somehow, she was with Enzo when Dot and Bob won the game.  She then came out of the game to join everyone in Mainframe.  At first, everyone in the town was scared of her, but eventually she became an asset to the whole crew, especially Enzo (she keeps him sane when they're game hopping, later on).  I think that covers all of the sprites...

There are two prominant bad guys in Reboot.  Both of them are viruses (virii?) and they're actually brother and sister.  Megabyte is a ruthless virus who wants to take over all of Mainframe, and eventually even the SuperComputer itself.  Hexadecimal, on the other hand, can be quite dangerous, but she's generally somewhat crazy, thus posing too much of a threat; though a virus is still a virus.  Later on, season 3 I think, Megabyte launces Bob out into the web after both virii and sprites had joined together to prevent an invasion from the web.  Before that, however, Bob had upgraded Enzo's icon to that of a guardian.  With Bob gone, Enzo is the only guardian left to protect Mainframe.

I don't want to ruin too much of the story, as it is a wonderful show that you should see for yourselves.  It has all of the subtle humor that you'd expect from a show like this, and it has a great plot that really holds up well.

Oh, there are also some "sub-characters" as well.  Sub is in quotes only because they aren't main characters, per se, but they were necessary for the plot.  First, there's Mouse the fiery, orange haired, female hacker; and then there's Turbo (?) the.. searchengine I believe.  Next-generation, too, I think.  The two of them eventually fall for eachother too, just when Mainframe is about to go boom.  There's also a binome, Captain Capacitor, that Enzo and AndrAIa meet up with while system hopping, thus going out to the web with him.

As I said, I don't want to ruin too much more, nor can I really remember too much more, as it's been almost three years since I've even seen an episode of Reboot...  But here are some sites with more information about Reboot if you'd like to know more:

http://www.inwap.com/mf/reboot/index.shtml
And the Official Reboot Site
And, of course, Mainframe's Site

I guess the whole reason I posted this was because I was thinking of names for my new computer, and I was going through Matrix names.  Not the really big ones like Neo and Trinity, but more of the not-so-big characters, like Tank.  I'm not sure if Mouse was a character in the Matrix, but that popped into my head.  Then Mouse, the hacker from Reboot, popped into my head.  Then I started going through all of the Reboot characters and eventually landed on AndrAIa.  So... yea.  I guess there's no real reason behind why I chose it, I guess I just like the name.

Damn, this was a long post.
