omg teh boredom pwned me!!

I recently went on a font search to acquire fonts for various TF logos (mostly for some of the forum themes).  One of the fonts is a very close imitation of the Perfect Dark font (entitled 'Perfect Dark' and everything).  I got to thinking...  Hm...  Maybe I could do something nifty in Illustrator to create a logo for TF. (Just for those who don't know, Adobe Illustrator is a vector based graphics editing tool, where as Photoshop is rastor based.  Vector based = MUCH control, i.e. you can move vertices around to change the shape of images and parts of images in real-time.  Very nice) Well, I still have a lot to learn with Illustrator and I just didn't feel as if it could do what I wanted it to do just yet.  So I fired up Photoshop and started messing around...  Here's the outcome:

compared to the actual logo:

Which (of mine) do you like better?  The top or the bottom?  The top one, I feel, is closest to the actual logo...  It's just too bad that the font isn't slanted like the PD logo... (and I can't italicize the font either...)

Feedback is welcome (and, actually, expected).

I asked Brian for some feedback and he said the inner part of the text needed to be a bit lighter...  So I did the same cloud technique as before, but didn't do the difference clouds nearly as much.  I then applied some grain filter to it that gives it some texture:

That should read "Vector based," I was thinking 'vector,' but wrote vertex for some reason...

  1. Tony,

The top logo looks better.  If the font is a vector font (eg. True Type), you can apply a slant to the letters by turning on italics.  The only problem is that you can’t control the amount of slant and may end up with too much slant.

Also…  In the industry, the two different images formats are refered to as raster and vector.

Raster images store individual dot information.  The advantage is that these images paint extremely fast because the processor only needs to read the dot information and write it directly to the display.  The disadvantage is that moving a dot at the end of a line only moves that one dot.  The other problem is when you zoom in on the image it gets blocky.  Diagonal lines turn into stair steps.

Vector images store the instructions to draw an image as described by geometry actions.  An example would be circle(x,y,diameter) or line(xStart,yStart,xStop,yStop).  The advantage is when you move the end point, the entire polygon redraws to accommodate the new end point.  This method allows infinite zoom with clear straight fine lines.  The disadvantage is that it takes longer to display vector graphics, because the processer must execute all the individual draw commands.  Many times the lines draw across each other, making the computer traverse the same pixel multiple times.

I like to take advantage of both formats.  Draw everything in a vector graphics tool, then export the images as raster format for fast rendoring.  I keep the original vector graphics file for future changes.

    Enjoy,

    Pat

  2. tony + graphics editing program = god
    learn that…..
    :)

  3. It’s called VECTOR based.

  4. I wrote a big comment, but it didn’t save it.

  5. Are TrueType fonts vector based?  And I did this all in Photoshop, if you read it it says I quite Illustrator and went to Photoshop (not carrying anything over).  I still need to mess around in Illustrator to understand how it works/what I can do with it.

  6. I think they might be; print a doc with a True Type font at 200pt or so and witness the clarity.

  7. I like the bottom one better. The top one is far to dark

  8. In the original post, I meant top or bottom as in which logo (thin or thick edges, in the top image) did you like better?  The lighter one, below in the update box, is now the current version.

  9. YES!  True Type fonts are vector based.  Many years ago I wrote a True Type font to C source code generator.  I have the documentation on the True Type font file format and I’m sure I have the C source code generator.  I also have a True Type font to raster font source code generator too.  BTW…  *.WMF (Windows MetaFile) is also vector based.  I wrote a C source code generator for that too.

  10. idk…. i don’t really like the text chosen. It makes trashfolder look like some type of spaceship or something. and whats with the quote mark at the end?

  11. Icebreaker– it’s Trashspaceshipfolder.

  12. I did the logo in the same way as the Perfect Dark logo, hence the quote mark… (’twas never explained why there was a quote mark in the PD logo though)

  13. The neat thing about the font is that the letters link together so well.  The T links into the R links into the A into the S into the H into the F.  And the the E into the R.
