Whoa
I got bored and was reading some comments on the new graphics card that I want (now at $220!). One of them said that moving from VGA to DVI for his main monitor (the Geforce 6600GT doesn't have any VGA ports, dual DVI) gave him much more clarity and sharpness. I realized that I had my second monitor, and old 14 incher, on the DVI port. So I messed around a bit and eventually got the main monitor, 19", on the DVI port and the old one on the VGA port. Well, the main monitor is a bit clearer, but I also noticed something else. I decided to up the refresh rate, I was sitting at a nice, low, 60hz. Whenever I went above 75hz it would bother my eyes. But I'm at 120hz right now and I notice nothing. Weird. Anyway, the crazy thing is that the mouse moves MYCH faster and things are noticeably smoother. Problem is, however, that the mouse is a litte too fast on the main monitor, but it is considerably slower on the second monitor... Lowering the mouse speed in the control panel makes the mouse bearable on the main monitor, but kills it on the secondary monitor. Hm.. The logical option is to lower the refresh rate, but I'll give it a while and see how it is.
ATI = teh suck
Well, except for the fact that they power the graphics in the Gamecube... Their drivers are so gosh darn hard to install in linux!! It frustrates me to no end! After Christmas, I am so buying myself that wonderful Geforce 6600 GT AGP 8x!! Just download the nvidia install script, and BAM! Done! No messing with the kernel (at least, not on the user end), no crap! Actually, I wouldn't be having this problem if I were to use Red Hat, or some other distro that uses the rpm system, but I prefer Debian. Apt-get is one nifty little app, very powerful. Plus I can 'apt-get upgrade' to upgrade my installation and get all the benefits of the upgrade without reinstalling! Take that Windows! Bah... The Geforce is looking REALLY nice right now... I'm slipping back to my nvidia roots, not that there's anything wrong with that. They make wonderful cards (so does ATI, don't get me wrong) that are very easy to install.
Whoa…
For $245, I can get an AGP Geforce 6600GT (previously only PCIe). The thing is, I'll have to save up my money... I'm buying a DS (hopefully) this Sunday, launch day. I can pay for about $130ish of it in cash (I've never had so much money in my wallet before), but that's roughly $20 less than the system itself. Then I'm also buying Super Mario 64 DS, which should be in the $30 - $40 range. So, I'll have to save up quite a bit to grab this video card, if I even do grab it that is. 'Cause I'll also need to save up $400 some if I want to get that file server... I might just scrap the file server for now... But the graphics card would actually be a very good thing to get, as it would benefit me not only on my machine, but on the two other machines I use. I could put my current Radeon 9600 XT into Brian's machine, take the Geforce FX 5200 from that and stick it in David's, and take the Geforce 2 MX from that and kill it. Yes, the 5200 is a sucky card, but David will be SO happy with the performance increase. Warcraft III and Tribes 2 will run MUCH better on his machine, and that's all that matters to him. Hm. I need to sit on this for a bit...
bah!
In regards to this post, the kernel I compile refuses to mount /dev/hda3 as root! Poop on it! So close too... If I can just figure out why it won't mount it as root, I'm all set to go.
In the mean time, I've found an interesting game called MapleStory. It's a side-scrolling MMORPG. What?? Yea, you heard me right.
Bah!! I think I might finally have the right tutorial that goes through everything this time, but I keep erroring in various parts that I shouldn't be!! Bah! Also, I shouldn't have to install the nForce drivers if my kernel already has support for the nForce built in, right? Oh well. I'm gonna take a step away from this for the weekend (quite literally, I'll be at my dad's house all weekend) and calm down a bit... Why can't they make the ATI drivers as easy to install as nVidia made there's??? It's not so hard, is it?? ... I'm working from 6PM-10PM on Saturday, that's it. I'm also going over Paul's house to help him build his computer tomorrow, right after school. His new motherboard arrived earlier today and it posted and everything when the guys did it at CBW, so everything's good.
Damn you ATI!!! I love your graphics card, but it's such a pain in the ass to install under Linux!!!
Yes!
This may just be what I've been looking for the whole time! It's a tutorial on how to install an ATI 9600 XT on an nForce 2 board under Linux! That is EXACTLY my problem! Well, I didn't know that the nForce 2 was causing any problems, but I bet it wouldn't be so bad if I had this card on a VIA-based motherboard. This is also designed for Red Hat/Fedora, but I shouldn't have to change much for Debian.
The Rage3d link is what the linuxquestions tutorial is based on, so I linked them both. Hopefully now I can get my card installed! w00t
