Whooa!! Everything's so sharp! It's sorta like that s-video cable I recently got for the cube. Can ya guess what I'm talking about? New glasses! That's what! It's sooo cool! Anyway.
I burned another copy of DSL to keep at my mom's house. Boy does 250 extra mhz REALLY make a difference! It runs like a dream! Mozilla, which is slow on David's (500mhz) is normal (Internet Explorer normal) on my mom's (750mhz). I can't wait to try it on mine =P If you don't recall, I have a 2ghz, =P. The new version that I burned today is v4.8. The one that I had on the mini-disc was v4.5. Such a small number update, but so much greater (extra setup options for the netcard, and actually recognizes my sound card). Too bad I still havn't figured out how to get Lilo to work correctly... It'll be even harder on my mom's computer, cause hdb1 (Win98, FAT32, harddrive 2) still has stuff on it that we (mostly me) wanna keep. hda1 (WinXP, NTFS, harddrive 1) can't even be read by DSL, cause the filesystem is NTFS. Which'll make it harder to install Lilo correctly... Well, I could always tell the BIOs to boot from the second drive and install Lilo there. It shouldn't upset Windows in anyway. Windows should still see the main harddrive as C. I tried this on David's computer, but it said "L 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99" and then just froze. But that was with DSL v4.5. I'm gonna try reinstalling Lilo again, but this time with DSL v4.8. It might work, it might not. There's only one way to find out.
Actually, for a while, David's computer wouldn't boot. I don't remember how I did it, but it would check the CD-Rom for a bootable CD, then say "LI" then freeze. 'twas really weird. But, luckily, I found a DOS boot disk with fdisk on it (thanks to Jason for suggesting it). I just did a fdisk /mbr, and Windows would boot again. So, David's computer can be used, but that's with Windows.
lol, the title and category have almost nothing to do with this post. Well, the category does, now. It used to miscellaneous (sp?) because I was typing first about the glasses. Usually that's what I make the topic, but I should really make the topic what most of the post is about. And, for some reason, Mozilla isn't showing the "Put this post under a secondary category", not like it matters, it wouldn't display it on the page. The title, however, shouldn't have to relate to the post at all, I try to make it though, but it gets hard to think of interesting titles.
Oh, interesting side note. I ripped my CD of SSBM music performed live by an Orchestra, but it sounded pretty bad when I played it through Winamp. It was really quiet too. But, when it's played through xMMs, it sounds normal! Well, close to normal. Some of the instruments aren't like the CD (the CD sounds AWESOME), but it's not nearly as bad as it was in Winamp. Speaking of xMMs, it's almost EXACTLY like Winamp. It'll import winamp playlists, AVSs (yes! I love the AVSs I made!), it has the same keystrokes/button layout as Winamp, everything's the same! It's awesome. I even heard about this Tribes 2-esque game for Linux, I saw some screenshots, and it looked exactly like Tribes 2. Except it's free. So, I should get it for Linux, if I ever get it installed, seeing as how Tribes 2 won't work on my mom's computer (I keep getting Unhandled Exceptions, yet I get none on my computer, odd). I think this entry is quite big, so I'm gonna stop typing, besides, I've said just about everything I wanted to.
Grr…
The copy of DSL that I had was a little mini-disc that I burned, not sure what version it was, but it was getting these little lines coming from the center. That's bad. We've already had one CD shatter in this cd-rom, 'twasn't pretty. There were pieces of it on David's bed, lol. So, I burned another copy, using a big full size CD this time, and apparently I burned a newer version, cause I've not got the xpacman game, many more options in the menus (maybe I can DSL to see the netcard on my computer, now, with the netcardconfig app under the admin menu), plus it recognizes David's soundcard now! Yayay! So I'm listening to my mp3s from the other harddrive =P. Anyway, I tried installing DSL, I got it to install correctly (i'll wanna reinstall it, though, because I've got a newer version now), but the only problem was Lilo. It'd install on hdb5 (DSL, second harddrive), but it'd say that hdb5 wasn't the main harddisk... I tried to install it on hda1 (windows, first harddrive), but it says permission denied, and that a bunch of folders and such don't exist.. Linux folders... Not good... I'm gonna sign up for the DSL user forums and ask around there, but I'm kinda lazy, and happy that I can finally listen to my music now! hahah I just need to be able to set the equalizer to how I like it. (laptop speakers/headphones for those of you who care). Maybe it'd be easier if I just reformated the main harddrive with the ext2 file system or whatever. David hasn't used this computer in so long anyway... I've clocked way more time on here than either brian or david, but brian's pretty close.
Oh well..
Hmm
I'm using DSL (Damn Small Linux, remember?) a lot more often than I intended. Which is cool. I just remembered, too, that David has a second harddrive in his machine. It's a 4 gigger, more than enough for Linux. I've got install CDs that I downloaded for Mandrake 8.1, I think. I was thinking of installing that on the second harddrive, and making the computer a dual-boot. That'd be pretty cool. Hopefully Linux, when it does whatever it has to to the second harddrive, will use all 4gb. I used fdisk to get Windows to see it again, but Windows only sees 2.27gb... fdisk says that it's 4gb, but the primary dos partition takes up 2.27gb, and that the extended DOS partition takes up 1.3gb, where's the extra 500mb? Not like it matters, Linux will kill all the DOS stuff on it, then I'll be happy, I just got Windows to recognize the harddrive last night, I havn't even put anything on it yet. David won't know it's gone (I don't think he even knows it's here, but then again he hasn't used his computer in SOOO long). Hm.. Well, I'm gonna try to put Linux on it. I did it once on my computer, but that was a separate partition on the same harddrive. I didn't feel too safe doing that. But doing it on another harddrive makes me feel better. So, that's what I'm gonna do now, cya!
Guess what I’m updating from
If you guessed linux, here's a cookie. I'm using DSL (Damn Small Linux), Jason gave me the link to it. I was originally gonna use it to set up a web server and copy files to my dad's computer to back them up on CD. But DSL couldn't "link up" (it kept saying "eth0: link up" over and over, then it just finally gave up). So, I'm on David's computer right now. Our computer works fine, but I had to go inside and take the net card out and put it back in (Jason said that he had to do that when his machine was messing up once, too). So if that's all I had to do, this reformat was unnecessary? Yea, but it's nice having a clean system. I'm also running nAIM, a console based AIM client. It's actually pretty cool. I think I might use DSL more often. The only problem is that you gotta download and install Firebird every time you wanna use it, there are other browsers, but they suck. Jason said that Lynx was on this thing, I have yet to find it. It's fun surfing the web in a text browser. You may be wondering why I said you have to download and install firebird everytime, right? Well, DSL is based off of Knoppix, which was a version of linux that either booted off of a floppy or a CD. Not sure which. DSL is only 50mb. I was reading the site, and the guy who runs it said that DSL wasn't ever going to get bigger than 50mb. So that's why ya gotta download and install Firebird everytime. It's not that bad, pretty quick if you've got broadband. But I want Lynx, damnit! Hm.. more later, I guess.
WTF!?
... Our computer (mine and Brian's, commonly referred to as "mine", as it will be hence forth known as in this journal) is acting funny. It boots up fine, but when it gets to the log in screen, it freezes, then it unfreezes for about 5-10 seconds, then it freezes again. These "freezing spells" last for about 15 seconds each. If Windows is allowed to boot normally (i.e. not safemode), then if you don't do anything, it'll just freeze up entirely. If you boot to safe mode with command prompt, it's perfect fine. Why? Safe mode with command prompt doesn't launch explorer.exe. The other two safemodes (safe mode and safe mode with networking) launch explorer.exe and freeze like normal mode. BUT, I'm able to kill explorer.exe via the task manager, and when I re-launch explorer.exe (via the task manager again) it doesn't freeze anymore. Interesting... BTW, for all of you who don't know, explorer.exe is Windows. Go into a non-2000 or NT Windows desktop (XP is considered NT) and alt+ctrl+delete. Then choose explorer.exe, and hit end task. Good bye Windows! You're screwed! hahaha. Fun stuff. You'll have to restart, but, if you're on 2000 or NT/XP, then the Task Manager can still load without explorer.exe being loaded. It has the same effect (killing windows), but it isn't as severe. Anyway, my plan is to reformat my computer. But, first, I gotta back up all the files I need/want. Namely those Splinter Cell save files. I am NOT gonna do that all over again! That's a damn hard game! And I'm not even halfway through it yet! So, now, I'm gonna start copying the necessary files. I won't start the reformat/reinstallation just yet, I won't have enough time before my mom comes and picks me up. But I will tonight, and, hopefully, it'll be completed tonight. Wish me luck.
