OMF: Battlegrounds

Posted on August 17, 2004

One Must Fall (OMF, OMF:2097)was an old game for DOS.  I think I still might have the 14mb CD ISO somewhere.  It was a fighting game where you took control of a gigantic robot (you weren't in the robot, some sort of neural link or something) and fought another gigantic robot to win various tournaments.  Was a fun game with quite a bit of depth.  There were 11 different robots (one of them was a secret robot, you couldn't choose it in the single player or two player game and you had to buy it in the tournament mode.  It cost a crap load of money and wasn't always available).  In tournament mode, where I spent most of my time, you had to fight through a tournament, get money from winning, spend the money on upgrades, and go through the next tournament.  Eventually you'd get to the final tournament and hopefully become the champion.  You'd start out with the basic Jaguar robot, but would later be presented oppourtunities to buy different robots.  Personally, I liked the Jaguar.  Nice and fast, good attacks, nice specials (laser shots are always nice, as is the Jaguar Leap).  This game was truly awesome.

That was just a little background on One Must Fall.  Apparently, One Must Fall: Battlegrounds has been released.  I used to be watching this one closely, but it was in development for so long that I had just kinda given up on it.  I got bored today, and was looking for a Windows port of the original OMF, when I came across a download for the OMF:BG demo.  Demo??  Hey!  That must mean the game is out! And, indeed, it is.  So, I'm downloading the demo right now, it's 200 some meg.  Hopefully it does justice to the original game...

Doom 3 comes out TOMORROW!  Yay!  If Mom orders my computer tonight, I'll see if I can also order Doom 3 from EBGames and get that free 2-day shipping offer they have.  Then Doom 3 should arrive either slightly before my computer, or on the same day as my computer.  Um..  ..  Doom 3!!  Doom 3!!  Doom 3!!

Fun

Generations Arena is a VERY fun mod for Quake3 that merges 5 different iD games into one.  When you first start out, you choose a "class."  The classes are based on various games that iD has made in the past.  They include: Wolfentstein (the Earth Warriors), Doom (Doom Warriors), Quake 1 (Slipgate Travelers), Quake 2 (Strogg Warriors), Quake 3 (Arena Fighters).  It is a VERY fun game and it's just so awesome to see so much stuff from the early games recreated in Quake 3.  It's only at v.99d right now, v.99e will include MANY updated models and skins that'll make each class feel more and more like their original games.  Go download it.  Now.

Edit (more information): Each class has it's own weapons based on said games.  They also use the models from their respective games, various powerups have slightly different effects (invulnerability, for example, in the doom class inverts the screen like it did in Doom; the stimpack/adrenaline, instead of upping max health for a short time like in Q2, gives you beserker mode for a short time).  There are also slight physics changes for each class.  The doom class is quite fast and has some nice air control.  The slipgaters, however, have VERY responsive air control, but may be a bit slower on ground (? I've never played QuakeWorld, but many people say it is very faithful).  The Stroggers have their full arsenal from Quake 2 (all eleven weapons).  And, of course, there's more, much much more.

Yes!

Alright!  Screw KOTOR, I'm getting Doom3 baby!  I can't wait!  And what's even better, it's Linux ready out of the box!  My question is, does that mean I can buy one copy and get a version for both OSs?  Or do I have to buy each separately?  If it's the former, I'd like to also greet the machine Brian and I share to the wonderful love that is Doom3.  If it's the latter, then too bad!  Linux all the way!

According to this comment it (the machine Brian and I share at the moment) is somewhere in between the low-end and the mid-range PCs.  AndrAIa, when I finally get her, will be somewhere between the Mid-Range and the High-End PCs.  Actually, the exact graphics card (and amount of RAM) that I'm getting is listed in the Mid-Range PC, where as the processor that I'm getting is more near the High-End PC.  w00t w00t!  I should have my computer by that time, so that'll be awesome.  If not, I could still buy it before I get my computer ^_^
